    The National Road

The National Road was authorized by US President Jefferson in 1806 as a way to connect the eastern and western states. Construction of the National Road began in 1811 in Cumberland, Maryland, and finished in Vandalia, Illinois, in the 1850s. After falling into disrepair in the late 1800s, the National Road was revamped and became the first interstate, known today as US Route 40. To date, it is the only completely federally funded road, running from New Jersey in the east to California in the west.

Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway

Running approximately 75 mi (120 km) through Colorado's northern Rockies, Top of The Rockies Byway is on of 53 nationally recognized drives. While on the minimum two-hour drive, explore the numerous historic sites, scenic vies, hiking trails, lakes and unique communities found along the way. Be prepared for any weather as the higher elevation causes quick fluctuations. The road runs from Copper Mountain on Hwy 91 until it hits Hwy 24, and then along Hwy 24 from Minturn to Twin Lakes. Visitors can identify the highway by the Columbine flower seen on sign posts.
