The ghost town of Independence is located southeast of Aspen in central western Colorado. The site is open daily for self-guided tours, but shuts down for the winter months. Historic cabins, saloons and boarding houses recall the towns mining days. A historical and environmental interpretive station is also located here. Address: Hwy. 82 CO USA

Healy House and Dexter Cabin were built in 1878 and 1879, respectively, and are two of Leadville's oldest residences. Dexter Cabin belonged to mining investor James V. Dexter. The Greek Revival-style Healy House was built for the bridge of August R. Meyer, before it was sold to Dan Healy. It contains antique furnishings, some of which belonged to the prominent Tabors. Built by a prominent Leadville citizen, H.A.W. Tabor in 1879, the Tabor Opera House was one of the finest buildings of its kind. Standing three stories high, the opera house continues to hosts a variety of entertainment events and is continually being restored. Tour one of America's best-known silver mines: Matchless Mine. Bought by famous Leadville citizen Horace Tabor in 1879, the mine produced of silver an unmatched $2,000 each day at it's peak. Later it became the home of Tabor's widow, "Baby Doe", after he passed away in squaller after he lost his fortunes when the silver market busted. Tour the home of famous Leadville citizens Augusta and Horace Tabor. The couple lived here from 1877 to 1881, until the infamous scandal when Horace left his wife for another woman known as Baby Doe. Fryingpan Kilns Built in the 1880s, the Fryingpan Kilns of Basalt were established to help process charcoal. In total seven structures were built in Basalt and other nearby areas. What started out a single preserved schoolhouse has grown to contain at least 10 buildings. Visitor's can tour Frisco Historic Park, which boasts a jail, several heritage homes and a chapel, as well as a museum in the old schoolhouse. Interlaken Ghost Town Once a thriving lakeside resort, Interlaken was one of the most popular Colorado destinations in the 1880s. Today some of the structures remain for visitors to see. Take a walk among preserved fossils of ammonites, giant shellfish, and other marine relics near Kremmling. Many of the fossils date back to the Cretaceous period (144 million to 65 million years ago). The site is located 13 mi (20.8 km) north of Kremmling. Moved from its original location, the Lula Myers Ranch House offers a glimpse at the architecture of the early pioneers. The two-story house was built in 1885 from hand chopped logs and walls insulated with newspaper.
